This course describes the purpose and features of baseline assessments and how they differ from action-oriented assessments. It also provides guidance on selecting a baseline assessment method depending on the context, and on how to incorporate historical trends when conducting food security assessments.

The target audience of the e-learning course includes:

  • Mid-level managers, technical staff, field personnel who are involved in the collection, management, analysis, and reporting of food security information.
  • Planners, policy formulators and programme managers who are involved in monitoring progress in poverty reduction, and meeting food security goals and targets.

  • Overview of baseline and action-oriented assessments.
  • Understand the criteria for defining an appropriate method, building on the options available.
  • Selecting a baseline assessment method.
  • Monitoring changes in food security: early warning and monitoring food security trends.

The course consists of 3 lessons, ranging from approximately 40 to 45 minutes duration each:

  • Lesson 1 – Introduction to Baseline and Action-oriented Assessments
  • Lesson 2 – Selecting a Baseline Assessment Method
  • Lesson 3 – Monitoring changes in food security
