This course covers the basic concepts of malnutrition, describes how nutritional status is assessed, and identifies the most commonly used nutrition indicators. It also explains what the criteria to consider when selecting the indicators in specific contexts and situations.

The target audience of the e-learning course includes: mid-level managers, technical staff, field personnel who are involved in the collection, management, analysis, and reporting of food security information, as well as, planners, policy formulators and programme managers who are involved in monitoring progress in poverty reduction, and meeting food security goals and targets.

  • Relationships between nutrition, health and mortality
  • Strengths and weaknesses of the main sources of nutritional status information
  • Indicators of nutritional status and the causes of malnutrition
  • Criteria for selecting nutrition indicators in specific contexts

The course consists of 3 lessons, ranging from approximately 30 to 45 minutes duration each:

  • Lesson 1 - Nutritional Status and Food Security
  • Lesson 2 - Assessing Nutritional Status
  • Lesson 3 - Nutritional Status Indicators
